Thien Mu Pagoda at a glance
Thien Mu is a working Buddhist site, not only a photo stop. Its landmark is a tower of seven stories that rises above the grounds beside the Perfume River. It fits easily into a half day together with the river or the Imperial City.
The pagoda is usually dated to 1601, when Nguyen Hoang founded it. The tower, called Phuoc Duyen, dates to 1844 and is about 21 m (69 ft) high. These dates come from a private travel portal rather than a temple chronicle, so treat them as the commonly quoted version.

How a visit works
The grounds are small enough to see in a short stop. Plan the following in this order.
Getting there
Come by boat on the river or by car from the center. Both options are compared further down this page.
Entry
One travel portal reports free entry with voluntary donations. If you leave a donation, it is your choice and not a fee. Ticket rules can change, so check at the gate.
The tower and the grounds
Walk up to the tower and look at it from the courtyard. Take your time in the gardens and halls, and keep your voice low.
Time on site
Most visitors spend about 30 to 45 minutes. Add time if you want to sit quietly or if it is crowded.

Hours and best time of day
The same portal lists daily opening from 05:00 to 18:00. That is a long window, so you can choose a quiet moment. Early morning is cooler and calmer than midday.
Hue sees very heavy rain in autumn, and floods were reported in the city on 9 October 2026. Hours and access can change at short notice in such weather, so check conditions before you set out. Our Hue weather guide shows the monthly rainfall pattern.
Getting to Thien Mu
The pagoda is about 5 km from the center, which is why many visitors combine it with a river trip.
| Option | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Boat on the Perfume River | About 30 to 45 min one way | Depends on the operator and whether a dragon boat is chartered |
| Car or ride-hailing | About 5 km from the center | GrabCar Premium lists a minimum of VND 119,782 for the first 5 km in Hue (from 28 April 2026). Tolls and surcharges are extra. |
The boat time is a rough guide because the starting pier matters. There is no public ferry timetable, so arrange a boat with an operator or your hotel and agree the return before you leave. For more on boats, piers and evening cruises, read our Perfume River guide.
Dress code and etiquette
Visitors describe a simple dress code. Cover your shoulders or upper arms, and wear long trousers or a skirt that reaches the knee. Take off your shoes before you enter the main hall.
- Carry a light scarf or shirt in your bag for the moment you need it.
- Wear shoes that come off easily.
- Speak quietly and do not point at statues or monks.
- Ask before you photograph a monk or another visitor. Do not photograph people at prayer.
- Donations are voluntary. Nobody should pressure you for money.
This dress code comes from visitor descriptions, not from a posted house rule, so follow any signs and staff instructions on the day.

Combine Thien Mu with other sights
Thien Mu pairs well with the river, because the pagoda sits right on its bank. Many people travel there by boat and return by road, or the other way round.
The walled Imperial City is the main sight in the city center. The royal tombs lie upstream and outside the center, as described in our royal tombs guide. For ideas across the city, see things to do in Hue.
If you travel on south after Hue, the old town of Hoi An is the next major heritage stop on the coast.
