Hue in a nutshell

Hue lies on the Perfume River in central Vietnam. From 1802 to 1945 it was the capital and the political, religious and cultural center of the Nguyen dynasty, and the complex of Hue monuments joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993. The sights fall into three groups: the Imperial City in the center, the pagodas and the river, and the tombs and day-trip targets outside town.

Three terms confuse many visitors. The Citadel, the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City are separate historic areas, one inside the other. The ticketed Dai Noi is not the same as every street inside the outer citadel wall. Our Imperial City guide sorts this out. This site is an independent guide. It is not the city's tourism portal and has no link to the authorities that run the monuments.

Before you go

Four things to sort out first.

Getting there

Private transfers from Phu Bai airport are listed by one transfer company from USD 12 by sedan, USD 15 by SUV and USD 25 by van, one way (listing checked October 2026). A tourist heritage train also runs between Hue and Da Nang. The city's tourism office reported fares of VND 180,000โ€“500,000 by date and class when the train was refreshed on 26 March 2026. There is no direct train to Hoi An, so the usual route is the train to Da Nang followed by a road transfer.

Money

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Street stalls and small shops are often cash only. Hotels and larger operators often accept international cards, but do not count on cards at every ticket counter. Bring cash for remote sites, and ask your card issuer about conversion fees.

Heavy rain

Floods hit Hue in early October 2026, with reports dated 9 October 2026. On 3 November 2025 the Ministry of Culture suspended visits to all monuments of the Hue complex because of flooding. If you travel in the wet season, check the situation just before you go. Details are on our Hue weather page.

How long to stay

The national tourism authority suggests a 3-day plan for culture seekers. That is a route suggestion, not a minimum. Add a day for the DMZ or the Hai Van Pass if you want them.

Entry rules for Vietnam in 2026

Status of 20 October 2026. Rules change, so check with your government before you book.

PassportRule
GermanyUp to 45 days visa-free. Entry and exit days both count. The passport must be valid for 6 months from entry, and the Federal Foreign Office asks for a printed return or onward ticket.
SwitzerlandA government decision reported on 15 August 2025 allows up to 45 days from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028. An older foreign ministry list shows extra conditions, so confirm the current terms.
AustriaVisa required. An e-visa of up to 90 days is possible.
United StatesVisa required before travel.

The e-visa costs USD 25 for a single entry and USD 50 for multiple entries on the immigration authority's instructions, with a stated processing time of 3 working days. US government guidance says 3 to 5 working days is typical, so apply early and print the approved e-visa. Use the government e-visa portal and not a paid agent. US guidance also describes a pre-arrival declaration, at the earliest 3 days before arrival, for air travelers with a foreign passport. Check whether it applies to your entry.

Hue in your Vietnam route

Hue sits between the north and the south of the country. Many travelers continue to Hoi An over the Hai Van Pass, about 130 km (81 mi) away by road, or by train to Da Nang and a road transfer. In the north, Ha Long Bay is the usual stop for boat trips and cruises. Both have their own independent guides.
