The Perfume River at a glance
The river is part of the historic landscape of the imperial capital. Hue was the seat of the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and the royal tombs lie upstream, outside the central imperial district. That makes the water a natural way to understand how the city fits together.
Most visitors meet the river in three ways. They cross it on the Truong Tien Bridge, walk along its bank on Le Loi Street, or take a dragon boat. Dragon boats are traditional-style passenger boats that tour operators use for cruises and charters.

Ways to spend time on the river
These are the options that show up most often. Prices are listings from tour operators, not fixed tariffs.
Sunset dinner cruise
A dragon boat trip with dinner in the evening. One operator lists it at USD 54 per person (listing, check before booking), with the boat, dinner, an English-speaking guide and a simple cyclo pickup included.
Evening Ca Hue trip
A shorter boat trip with live Ca Hue music. An operator article lists two slots, 19:00 to 20:00 and 20:00 to 21:00, from a pier at 49 Le Loi.
Boat to Thien Mu Pagoda
The pagoda is on the river bank about 5 km west of the center. The boat ride takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on where you start.
Walk or cycle the bank
Le Loi Street follows the river in the city center. It is free, flexible and good for the Truong Tien Bridge at dusk.

The sunset dinner cruise in detail
One operator, Culture Pham Travel, lists a Perfume River sunset cruise with dinner at USD 54 per person. The listing includes the dragon boat, dinner, an English-speaking guide, a simple cyclo pickup and, according to the operator, fees and taxes.
- Not included: drinks with dinner, tips and pickups from outside the center.
- Children under 8 pay 50 percent. From age 8 the adult price applies.
- Pickup is listed at 17:30, with boarding at the Toa Kham pier.
These are the terms of that one product, not a general fare list. Other operators set their own prices, so compare what each includes.

Evening music on the water
Ca Hue is a Hue music tradition, and some evening boat trips are built around it. An operator article names two slots, 19:00 to 20:00 and 20:00 to 21:00, with a pier at 49 Le Loi. That article was last revised in December 2025, and its notes on later weekend hours contradict each other. Treat the times as a starting point and confirm the schedule when you book.
If music is the main draw, ask whether the performance is live and how many people share the boat.
Seasons, rain and floods
The same operator article notes that boat trips are limited in October because of rain. That is a seasonal pattern, not a fixed annual closure, so do not assume a boat is always unavailable in autumn.
Hue's rainfall peaks in autumn, and floods were reported in the city on 9 October 2026. High water can affect boats, piers and riverside paths. A boat listing does not mean that swimming is allowed or that the river is navigable on a given day, so stay out of the water and follow the crew's instructions. See our Hue weather guide for the monthly pattern, and check conditions on the morning you plan to go.
Combine the river with other sights
The Thien Mu Pagoda is the classic river stop, with its seven-story tower. The Imperial City is the historic heart of the capital, and the royal tombs lie upstream, outside the center. For more ideas, see things to do in Hue.
If you want a very different kind of boat day on the central coast, the basket boats of Cam Thanh near Hoi An are a short hop south. For the old town itself, see Hoi An.
